One person. Seeking to motivate Many.

Many organizations have many messages regarding Safety - Safety First, Think Safety, Safety Starts With You, etc. All good. All tried and true.

In my years of being a Safety Professional (since 1989), I have come to believe in ONE message: 

Safety Always.

Ingrained. Muscle memory. Without question. Without prioritization. Safety just IS.

I thought once, long ago, that I would be able to save the world - if I did my job well, I could retire, knowing that the world was a safer place. Well, at least the construction world that I am familiar with...

The construction world is safer, indeed, because of my own efforts, because of yours, because of the hard working men and women who have embraced change, and grown with the industry.

Technology has improved, tools have improved, insurance is a driving force, regulations have been improved, the value of a human life versus progress seems to have evolved.

But people still die.

Overall fatality rates have decreased, to be sure. But try explaining that to a wife who has lost her husband, a daughter who has lost her dad, a son who has lost his mom.

​ONE IS TOO MANY.

One is too many.

A simple message. A daunting task. Take action. Save lives.

We have to get to a place where ANY injuries, ANY fatalities become unacceptable.

Not just Zero for a month, or a year.

Just Zero.

Impossible you say? Never in my lifetime you say?

Perhaps.

But if we shrug our shoulders and allow "the inevitable" losses to occur, we have already lost.

There has to be a sea change in how we conduct ourselves, how we conduct business, how we plan, how we work.

We can reduce. And reduce more. And keep reducing - because, quite simply, ONE IS TOO MANY.

I challenge you to ask yourself - if ONE is acceptable, then WHICH one?

Who among us can answer that question?
